Screening questions for delivery drivers.

A first round for delivery drivers should hear how someone drives, how they treat customers at the door and what they do when a drop goes wrong. The licence and vehicle checks belong in the screening form. Ten minutes of conversation covers the rest.

Interview
Audio-only, Scripted
Length
About 10 minutes
Language
English or Hindi

Drivers often apply from a phone between shifts, and a short audio interview in their own language fits that.

What to screen for

What the first round should tell you.

Safe driving
Drivers spend the whole shift on the road. Safe habits matter more than speed.
Reliability
Routes are planned before the shift starts. A missing driver means late orders for everyone.
Problem solving on the route
Wrong addresses, locked gates and unreachable customers happen every day.
Customer conduct
The driver is often the only person from your company a customer ever meets.

The questions

8 questions, and how to judge the answers.

Ask them in order. Listen for specifics: what happened, what they did, how it ended.

  1. 01

You reach the address and the customer isn’t answering their phone. What do you do?

    Strong answer

Calls and messages, waits a reasonable time, checks with a neighbor or the security guard where it makes sense, and follows the company’s failed-delivery process with a note.

    Weak answer

Leaves the parcel at the door, or marks it delivered without handing it over.

  2. 02

Your route has more drops than usual and you’re running late. How do you handle it?

    Strong answer

Re-plans the remaining stops, tells the dispatcher early and lets customers know about delays, without speeding or skipping safety.

    Weak answer

Drives faster or skips stops without telling anyone.

  3. 03

A customer is angry that their order is late. What do you say?

    Strong answer

Apologizes calmly, explains what they can, completes the handover politely and reports the complaint if needed.

    Weak answer

Argues, or blames the warehouse in front of the customer.

  4. 04

Which areas do you know well, and how do you find an address you’ve never been to?

    Strong answer

Names specific areas, and describes using the map along with landmarks and a quick call to the customer when the pin is wrong.

    Weak answer

Relies only on the map pin and gives up when it’s wrong.

  5. 05

What checks do you do on your vehicle before a shift?

    Strong answer

Names specific checks, such as tires, brakes, lights, fuel or charge and papers, and reports problems before leaving.

    Weak answer

Doesn’t check anything unless something breaks.

  6. 06

You pick up a package and it’s already damaged. What do you do?

    Strong answer

Reports it before leaving, takes a photo if the process allows it, and doesn’t deliver it without flagging the damage.

    Weak answer

    Delivers it and says nothing.

  7. 07

It starts raining heavily and you still have ten drops left. How do you handle the rest of the route?

    Strong answer

Slows down, keeps parcels dry, updates the dispatcher or customers on delays and pulls over if it becomes unsafe.

    Weak answer

Rides at the same speed to finish on time.

  8. 08

Why delivery work, and which hours suit you?

    Strong answer

Gives a practical reason and is clear and consistent about the shifts they can commit to.

    Weak answer

Vague about hours, or says “any time” without meaning it.

Before the interview

Screening questions

  • Which valid driving licence do you hold: two-wheeler, car or commercial vehicle? (Multiple choice)
  • Do you have your own vehicle for deliveries? (Yes / No)
  • Which shifts can you work? (Multiple choice)

Quick facts to read alongside the interview. They aren’t scored.

Listen for

Red flags

  • Treats speed as more important than safety.
  • Describes marking parcels delivered without handing them over as a normal shortcut.
  • Gets defensive or rude when talking through an upset customer.

Avoid

Common mistakes

  • Checking the licence but never asking how they drive or handle problems on the route.
  • Running a long, formal interview. Drivers need a short screen they can finish from a phone.
  • Asking about age or family instead of licence, vehicle, shifts and the areas they know.

Questions

What should I check before hiring a delivery driver?

A valid licence for the vehicle they’ll drive, access to a vehicle if the role needs one, and the shifts they can work. Then use the interview to hear how they handle late routes, missing customers and damaged parcels.

Can I ask about a driving licence in the screening form?

Yes. A licence is a requirement of the job. Screening answers are shown to you alongside the interview and aren’t scored, so you decide how to weigh them.
