Sales

Screening questions for inside sales representatives.

Inside sales is fast, repeated and almost all on the phone. A first round should hear whether this person can steer a short call, explain an offer clearly and ask for the sale without misleading anyone. Fifteen minutes of spoken answers covers it.

Interview
Audio-only, Scripted
Length
About 15 minutes
Language
English or Hindi

The job happens on the phone, often in Hindi, and scripted questions make a large applicant pool easy to compare.

What to screen for

What the first round should tell you.

Call control
Short calls with many people. They need to steer toward a decision without sounding rushed.
Closing on the call
Much of inside sales is decided in one or two calls. Someone has to ask for the order.
Clear product explanation
The buyer decides on the phone, so the offer has to make sense the first time they hear it.
Honesty with customers
Target pressure can push people to overpromise. That comes back as refunds and complaints.

The questions

8 questions, and how to judge the answers.

Ask them in order. Listen for specifics: what happened, what they did, how it ended.

  1. 01

Sell me something you know well, over the phone, in two minutes.

    Strong answer

Asks at least one question about what I need, explains the offer in plain words, handles one hesitation and asks me to buy.

    Weak answer

Talks for two minutes without a single question and never asks for the sale.

  2. 02

A lead filled in a form yesterday. When you call, they say they don’t remember doing it. What do you say?

    Strong answer

Reminds them briefly and without pressure, asks what made them look, and uses the answer to decide whether to carry on.

    Weak answer

Launches into the full pitch anyway, or apologizes and ends the call.

  3. 03

The customer says, “Let me think about it and call you back.” What do you do?

    Strong answer

Asks what they want to think over, answers that concern, and if they still need time, agrees a specific callback time.

    Weak answer

Agrees and waits for a call that never comes, or keeps pushing after a clear no.

  4. 04

A customer is about to buy a plan you think is wrong for them. What do you do?

    Strong answer

Points them to the plan that fits, even if it’s smaller, because a customer sold the wrong thing asks for a refund or doesn’t renew.

    Weak answer

Lets them buy the bigger plan because it helps the target.

  5. 05

A customer asks something about the product you don’t know the answer to. What do you do?

    Strong answer

Says they’ll check rather than guess, finds the answer and calls back when they said they would.

    Weak answer

Makes up an answer to keep the sale moving.

  6. 06

How do you keep your energy and quality up across a full day of calls?

    Strong answer

Describes a routine: calls in blocks, short breaks, reading notes before each callback and resetting after a rude call.

    Weak answer

Says it doesn’t affect them, with no habits behind it.

  7. 07

How do you use the CRM or lead sheet during a working day?

    Strong answer

Logs each call outcome and next step straight after the call, and uses that list to plan callbacks and priorities.

    Weak answer

Keeps it in their head and updates the system at the end of the week.

  8. 08

Tell me about a month you missed your target. What happened?

    Strong answer

Is honest about the number, names a cause within their control and describes what they changed the next month.

    Weak answer

Blames only the leads or the product.

Before the interview

Screening questions

  • Have you worked to a daily or monthly sales target before? (Yes / No)
  • Which languages can you sell in? (Multiple choice)
  • Which shifts can you work? (Multiple choice)

Quick facts to read alongside the interview. They aren’t scored.

Listen for

Red flags

  • Talks faster and louder as soon as they hear an objection.
  • Describes pressure tactics or misleading customers as normal.
  • Can’t say what they did differently after missing a target.

Avoid

Common mistakes

  • Screening on English fluency when most of the calls will be in Hindi or a regional language.
  • Skipping the phone role-play. It takes two minutes and tells you more than the résumé.
  • Hiring the loudest closer without asking how they treat customers after the sale.

Questions

How is inside sales different from an SDR role?

An SDR books meetings for someone else to close. An inside sales representative usually runs the whole sale on the phone, often in one call or a few short ones. Screen inside sales hires for call control and closing, and SDRs for prospecting and qualification.

Can I run the screening interview in Hindi?

Yes. LessRounds interviews can run in English or Hindi and in audio-only mode, so candidates answer in the language they’ll actually sell in.
